Greenspan's Yen Comments Misconstrued, Tanigaki Says

March 3 (Bloomberg) -- Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan's comments that Asian economies may have to reduce their ``extraordinary'' purchases of dollar assets were misconstrued by the media, Japan's Finance Minister Sadakazu Tanigaki said.

That Greenspan yesterday criticized Japan's yen-selling policy ``is what the headlines suggested, but what he actually said was probably a bit different,'' Tanigaki told Bloomberg News at parliament in Tokyo.

Greenspan, in a speech to the Economics Club of New York, said ``the current performance of the Japanese economy suggests that we are getting closer to the point where continued intervention at the present scale will no longer meet the monetary policy needs of Japan.''

The Bank of Japan, at the behest of the Ministry of Finance, sells yen to stem its gains against the dollar to help bolster Japan's recovery from its third recession since 1991. Rising exports and capital spending by manufacturers including Sharp Corp. fueled about more than half of Japan's annualized 7 percent growth in the three months ended Dec. 31.

Japan sold a record 20.4 trillion yen ($185 billion) last year, five times the amount sold in 2002. It sold 3.34 trillion yen from Jan. 29 through Feb. 25, the ministry said in Tokyo last week, following sales of 7.15 trillion yen in January, a record for one month.

The yen traded at 110.12 to the dollar as of 9:41 a.m. in Tokyo, compared to 110.10 in late New York late yesterday after rising as high as 110.42, the strongest almost in four months.
